What was the worst job you ever had?
Submitted by salaryman.
I would have to say the worst job I ever had was the one, single day that I worked in the cafeteria at The University of Montana. I had to deep-fry chicken and fries for four hours and the name they put on my nametag was "Auna". I never went back.
Who taught you how to cook?

Alton Brown, America's Test Kitchen, and my husband. And I still suck at it!
What food or drink do you love when it's cold out? (Recipes and recommendations, please!)
We just discovered a new, yummy soup at a Portland restaurant called Typhoon. The soup is called Tom Kah Gai and it's made with coconut milk, chicken broth, chili pepper flakes, chicken, and green onions. I know I'm going to crave it when it's cold outside and I'm sick this winter. My mouth is watering just thinking about it!
What's the most memorable building you've lived in?
Submitted by Shelly.
Maybe someday the most memorable building will be the house we live in now... our first home. But, right now the most memorable place I've lived was in an attic that was three blocks from The University of Montana in Missoula. I can't believe we lived there. I remember my dad hated to come over because he always hit his head. There wasn't much room to stand up straight, except if you walked directly down the middle of our apartment. The little space had a kitchen, a living room (with windows at the floor level), a bathroom (where we had to sit down in the tub to use the shower hose because the roof slant was too steep to stand in there), and a bedroom that looked out over the street. We thought it was so cute. I'm sure our families thought we were nuts, but they were kind enough never to say anything.
The best part of that place, however, was our downstairs neighbors. The husband and wife below us owned Big Dipper Ice Cream, the best ice cream shop in town, and we often received free samples from them.
A strong runner-up is the house we lived in after that attic. It was right next to a butcher shop and, during the summer, we had to hold our breath when we went outside in the hot afternoons because all kinds of animal flesh was cooking in the dumpster that sat in the alley between our house and the butcher shop.
How many pets have you owned in your lifetime? Tell us about them.

The Johns family had a lot of pets over the years... we'll see if I can remember all of them (mostly cats).
When I was little, my parents had a cat named Peeko (sp?) and a dog named Patrick. I'm pretty sure they both went to live with my grandparents when we were all little.
Then, I had an orange cat named Butterscotch (aka "Scotch"). He was my cat and I used to dress him up in the clothes for my Raggedy Ann doll. He almost died once when he ate a chicken wishbone but the vet revived him. I forget how old I was when he died of leukemia, but I remember that, when I learned of his death, my mom let me say "shit".
At the same time that we had Scotch, we had a calico cat named Tiffany who hated all of us kids. She ran away.
Then, we got Tootsie and Peanut. We realized too late that Peanut was deaf and, one day when my mom was rushing to get to my softball game, she ran over Peanut with the van. Tootsie stuck around for a long time and she had babies in my brother's bed on July 4th. I remember people coming over to take the kittens and it was very heartbreaking. But, we got to keep two of her kittens. One was named Stevie, after Stevie Wonder, because she was basically blind each morning until we wiped the goop out of her eyes. The other one was named Fuzzball and she was my brother, Jason's, cat. Fuzz lived for a very, very long time and it was only a few years ago that my parents had her put to sleep because she had cancer. My poor brother went home the night before she died and spent the night with her. I don't remember how Tootsie died, but I think my parents just found her dead one day of old age.
After Stevie died (I don't remember how), we got a Dalmatian named Docker. My dad got the dog after my brother pestered my parents to get one but he ended up being my dog. He slept in my bed and sat in my lap and was very, very spoiled. We thought it was funny to teach him to beg at the dining room table and all we had to do was make the "Buh" sound and he'd lean back on his hind legs. Docker died during my Junior year in college when he was hit by a car. I clearly remember coming home for a quick weekend and asking where Docker was and the look on my mom's face when she began to explain what happened. I bawled. I still miss that dog. He loved me so much.
Somewhere in there, my mom adopted a cat named Abby but I can't remember if I was in college at the time. She still has Abby, who has gotten fat and pees in the house so she's an outdoor cat now.
In 2001, Jason and I decided to add to our family. We went to the Humane Society in Savannah for one cat but ended up coming home with two, Morley and Clara. They're both nuts in their own way and they both insist on sleeping on me at night. I'm pretty sure Morley thinks I'm either his mom or his girlfriend. I like the convenience of having the cats. We can leave them for a long time and not worry about the house being torn to shreds. Plus, I don't have to follow them around with a bag to pick up poo.
What TV show(s) will you be watching this season? Why?

In my opinion, the hands-down best show on television right now is The Office. No question.
You thought I was going to say Lost, didn't you?
If you could only save one thing in a house fire (thing, not person), what would it be and why?
Submitted by donnunn.
You are probably going to think that I'm the worst person in the world for the way I answer this but oh well. I'd save my computer. It has my writing, invoices, photographs, e-mails, addresses, music, etc. on it and it is my livelihood. My first thought was to save my wedding album, but that actually can be replaced. Our photographer guarantees that he will make our negatives available to us forever (of course, if he has a fire I doubt Anna and Jason's negatives are at the top of his list). I think the next thing I'd save is the original art that Jason's uncle made us for our wedding.
Remember sniglets? Do you have any favorites? Have you ever made up your own word? (Now's as good a time as any.)
Inspired by Cute Overlord.
Anybody who knows us uses the word 'Hangry', which we invented while we were in Savannah. Definition: You're so hungry that you're angry. It's sweeping the globe!
