We had an awesome time last night, experiencing two storms at once. Western Oregon was smacked with our version of a blizzard (downpour with 80 mph winds) last night. Trees all over the area were falling on cars, houses, and power lines. At 10:30 last night, 245,000 people were without power. The streets were a mess- covered in large and small tree branches. A section of our neighbor's fence blew over.
But we didn't really notice any of this.
We went to Live Wire last night- which is our favorite thing to do. It's a public radio show that is taped in front of a live audience. The guest last night was Storm Large, a Portland rocker who also happened to be one of the most popular contestants on Rock Star: Supernova over the summer. The woman is unreal. She is drop-dead gorgeous with a hot bod and stunning facial features. She strikes me as the kind of person who only wears clothes because she can't go naked. She had a very commanding presence and kept the audience in a trance whenever she was on stage. She sang three songs: two of her originals, which you can hear at her MySpace website (she sang the PG-rated version of "Ladylike"). And she also capped off the evening with a very sultry version of "I'll Be Home for Christmas". I can't decide which was more striking: her look or her voice. Oh yeah, she has a bad ass band called "The Balls".
I think I have a girl-crush on her. She just had such a strong personality and self confidence that I couldn't help but wish I was her. I saw her perform a few times on Rock Star last summer, but that show didn't do her justice. The woman is a goddess on stage.
We had the most spectacular new experience tonight. There's a local radio show that records once a month at a downtown Portland theater and we went to see it. Actually, we went to see Michael Showalter perform and happened to get in on this wonderful, lovely radio program that we didn't even know existed.
It's called Live Wire and it's your typical NPR-style. live-to-tape radio broadcast, I suppose. It has a host and features all sorts of guests. Tonight the group recorded two shows and we got to see three comedians (including Michael Showalter), two bands, Oregon's poet laureate and the author of The Year of Yes. Plus, there were a bunch of sketches done by the host and her "faces for radio" group.
I was completely in love with the entire event. I adored the host, loved the sketches (especially the one about the Law and Order: Grammar Police--or something like that), enjoyed the music, and learned some new things. I also kept an eye on the producer and how she was running the show, because my brain apparently is still wired that way. I was very envious and spent a little time wondering how I could get a job with them and even considered trying to write a sketch for them making fun of television news in Oregon. I need to see a few more shows to get my head in the right place. Conveniently, the next show is August 17th at the Aladdin Theatre in Portland.
Oh, and Michael Showalter was hi-larious! He was doing a longer set at a bar called Dante's tonight, but... alas... I have to go trail running with my trainer tomorrow morning. I can only assume that it's a whole new form of torture.
